Controversial GM wheat fails to resist pests

The genetically modified crops are often criticized for their side effects. Many activists claim that it is dangerous to consume them without sufficient field trials. The pro-GMO lobby and corporations often justify these crops due to their high yields and pest resisting capabilities. This makes cheaper grains available to 7 billion human populations.

But contradictory to the popular beliefs, a genetically modified wheat variety failed to resist pests in the United Kingdom. Makers of the breed were expecting high pest resistance but couldn’t achieve so in field trials. The crop variety was named as whiffy wheat was expected to have an odor that shook pests away.  In this failed attempt, the researchers observed many attacks on the crop by pests at field.

The researchers say that odor worked in the laboratory tests. The team further added that success and failure are part of research and development process in technology. The new strain would be modified as per the field inputs now. Anti-GM campaign was at peak in the 2012 when activists protested the wheat field trial. Green groups are saying this result clearly shows the fake promises of GM technology.

The trial site was heavily guarded from the intruders and even wild animal which cost massive £444,000. The actual cost of research project is also as high as £732,000. This large-scale of investment leaves little room to go wrong on such fundamental aspect of the crop. The authorities still haven’t told about the reason behind such heavy security to the project.
