Six Victims of Synagogue Collapse Still Unidentified

Six victims of the 2014 Synagogue Church of All Nations collapse have still not been identified, said Consultant Pathologist John Obafunwa. The information was revealed during the probe into the cause of the incident which was set up by the coroner.

Lagos State Government set up the investigation to find out what happened on September 12, 2014 when a building which collapsed caused deaths of 116 people. The report named “Report on the Collapsed Building in Synagogue Church of All Nations,’’ was received by the court as Exhibit 034. According to a witness, autopsies were performed on all 116 victims.

The court also heard that the postmortem examinations were finalized on September 30, following which DNA samples were sent to Unistel Laboratory in South Africa. An identification committee was established shortly afterwards. The first time around 74 South Africans, alongside some people from Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland, etc, were identified and their bodies were released to the South African authority, some two months after the tragedy.

During the next sitting of the committee further 11 victims were identified, all from South Africa. There were in total 85 victims from that country. In addition to these victims, another 25, coming from Benin, Togo, and Nigeria, were identified. The total number of the identified stopped at 110, with the witness saying there are 6 more unidentified corpses in the morgues. He said that the injuries on their bodies correspond with a collapse of the building.
